The ClockTower - Editor's View

It appears that whatever the reasons behind the idea that it was 'necessary' to dismantle the unique architectural monument to the post war modernist optimism of the 1950's, the fact remains the architectural centre piece of the entire Langdon campus, our beloved Clocktower, which stood proudly for 30 years, has been destroyed.

Destroyed, through our lack of support?

Former pupils, parents, governors and many of the teaching staff, all could not prevent the demolition taking place. We must investigate a way to rebuild what has been destroyed. Or at least fully investigate other possibilities or alternatives.

Pledge your support for the campaign to Rebuild The Clocktower, please email us to be kept informed of the campaign RebuildtheClocktower@langdonschool.com we'll also let you know how you could help.

Selected quotes from our campaign supporters:

"The clocktower is of iconic significance, quite apart from its general architectural value & interest; what can be done to put it right?
Professor Stephen Brown
EHGS 1963-69"

"Please keep me informed, more than interested.
EHGS. 1966-1972."
Daniel Darlow

"
I was one of the first pupils to join [the merged school] Langdon in the September of 1972, and as I had to walk from the Town Hall down to Sussex Road, I used the clock tower as a "homing" device to help me in the first few days. I also remember that I arranged to meet my first girlfriend in front of the clock tower building after school to go out on our first date.
So I can honestly say I would love to see it restored to it's former glory, for the sake of the happy memories I have and I am sure there must be thousands of us out there who feel the same.
(1972 - 1978)."
Patrick Rogers

"
...what a focal point that [The Langdon ClockTower] was and what a loss to the community."
Mary Deacon (nee Wilson)
[1975-1980]

"... from all parts of East Ham you could see the clock tower and have no excuse for not knowing exactly how late you really were. How can we deprive future generations of this privilege?"
Louise
(nee Ward)
[Left Langdon 1984]
